Badassery

Doing Good | Challenging Norms | Adventures 365

I often get asked why I intentionally personify myself as a badass….

The truth is that you get to decide what and who you want to be. What qualifies me to be a badass? I do.

Badassery is my way of living just outside my comfort zone, in the place where I’m challenged. That’s where the growth happens. I live my life with three core missions:

  1. Contribute. I do this through how I support those in my field, by using my time, talents and expertise to help others improve their lives and careers, too. I volunteer, I advise, I invent, and I shine light on others. As a teacher my mission is to contribute to the future through my students - whether they’re kindergarteners who are just developing their love of music, teachers who are struggling with burnout, or 75 year olds just picking up their clarinet for the first time in 20 years.

  2. Experience. I love to experience new places, people, and activities - even if they are challenging or unpleasant. Every experience is a story and I am its author. I encourage everyone to see each day that we’re breathing is an opportunity to tell your own story, to craft your own badassery, and to appreciate every single moment.

  3. Self. I give myself physical, mental, and spiritual challenges and believe that is how we grow and expand to be able to contribute, to experience. I practice healthful habits and have achieved some pretty badass things along the way. I’ve been an award winning triathlete, I’ve summitted many peaks in Utah and Colorado, I’ve ridden the White Rim of Canyonlands, founded multiple organizations, hiked the Grand Canyon, shaved my head for St. Baldricks, did a trail experience every day for a year…and I’m ready for more.

Life is meant to be lived. I want to live it well.

Like a badass.
